Control Engineer

Thales is Europe’s number one supplier of defence electronics and a leading provider of integrated air defence systems.

Thales Glasgow designs a range of state-of-the-art Optronics solutions for some of the most technically advanced defence and security platforms for land, sea and air.

We are seeking talented Design Engineers, who can apply their knowledge and skills in an innovative control engineering design role. We have built up a team passionate about developing products for a safer world and we are now looking for like-minded engineers to join us.

Key responsibilities

  • Design line-of-sight and servo control systems to meet demanding systems requirements
  • Specify control system components, such as motors, gyros, inertial measurement units (IMU)
  • Develop control systems through a combination of modelling, simulation and hardware testing
  • Verify and validate solutions on final build hardware
  • Sustain existing products through support programmes, trials and new opportunities
  • Regularly feedback on progress to multiple project teams

Skills, qualifications and experience

You will have Bachelor or Masters Degree (BEng, BSc, MEng, MSc) in a Numerate, Scientific or Engineering subject or Higher Education/equivalent training and experience.

You will be an experienced user of Matlab and Simulink based tools for mathematical modelling, simulation and data analysis.

You will have a firm understanding of classical control system design methods.

Knowledge of modern control methods and inertial stabilisation would be beneficial.

Knowledge of mechanical dynamics and motor technology would be beneficial.

Desirable experience

  • Experience in code generation from Simulink models
  • Experience in designing to Functional Safety Standard IEC 61508
  • Experience in modelling and simulation of nonlinear dynamical systems
  • Experience in systems identification methods
  • Experience in deriving component requirements based on system technical performance requirements
  • Proficiency in C/C++ coding
  • Practical experience in designing, testing, optimising and implementing servo control systems

In line with Thales' Baseline Security requirements, candidates will be asked to provide evidence of identity, eligibility to work in the UK and employment and/or education history for up to three years.
