L’Activité Mondiale Systèmes de Transport Terrestre fournit des solutions de signalisation ferroviaire pour les grandes lignes et les transports urbains, des systèmes intégrés de communication et de supervision, des solutions billettiques et les services associés.

Thales fournit des systèmes de commande de trains par télécommunications (CBTC) et des systèmes d’enclenchement destinés au secteur des transports en commun sur voie ferrée à l'échelle mondiale. Le centre de compétences pour la signalisation ferroviaire urbaine est situé au centre-ville de Toronto. Nous sommes le plus grand bureau situé au Canada et nous disposons d’un service pour chaque étape du cycle de vie du développement logiciel (SDLC). Cela comprend le logiciel, le matériel, la conception des systèmes, la vérification et la validation, les opérations, etc. Les équipes de services partagés dans les domaines des finances, des ressources humaines et des technologies de l’information sont également situées sur ce site. Thales provides world-leading Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and interlocking for mass rail transit applications globally. The Centre of Competence for Urban Rail Signalling is located right before you at mid-town Toronto. As the largest office in Canada, we house a department for every step of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)! This includes Software, Hardware, Systems Design, Verification & Validation, Operations, etc. The supporting corporate shared services teams in Finance, Human Resources and IT is also located at the office. Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for the planning and implementation of all safety management activities within Thales’ scope of work. Report status of system safety activities to Director RAMS Engineering.
  • Manage the Safety Engineering team, ensuring that the safety processes are followed, and the execution of safety activities for projects/product. Responsible for monitoring performance against budget and schedule, metrics collection, weekly and monthly reporting
  • Support the company wide improvement process, including best practices and analysis methodologies. Ensure that the safety specialists work together as a team and cross-functionally within the company as a whole.
  • Prepare and approve safety plans in line with EN 50126, supervise safety engineering activities throughout the system lifecycle. Ensure safety activities are well integrated and aligned with the engineering plans, activities and artifacts.                   .  
  • Coordinate hazard management activities performed on product/project. Organize safety reviews to ensure system/subsystem design specifications correctly implement the safety requirements and safety design principles.
  • Establish effective safety case strategies and monitor the status of safety case dependencies. Produce safety case (product/generic/specific application) in line with EN 50129 and ensure the supporting safety evidence is sufficient to demonstrate the safety of the system. Liaise with the Independent Safety Assessors, as necessary.
  • Oversee the professional development of staff. Ensure that suitably competent staffs are assigned to perform hazard and safety analysis activities, and that the safety skills are continuously assessed and maintained.
  • Escalate technical safety issues to the Chief Safety Architect and Director RAMS Engineering. 
  • Review of Safety Risk, Safety Hazard and Pending Hazard CRs to ensure consistent and thorough assessment and analysis by safety specialists, and to ensure safety defects with broader implications are cloned and managed correctly.
  • Supervise other Safety Engineering Specialists and consultants by defining their work, coaching them on how and what to prepare, monitoring their progress, and directing them on priorities.
  • The Safety Engineering Manager reports to the Director RAMS Engineering and liaises with the Chief Safety Architect.  In addition, the RAMS Engineering Manager has an independent reporting path to the Safety Authority for Thales Canada.

Key Responsibilities

  • To adjust work plans to frequent injections of unplanned work activities.
  • To ensure system/subsystem design meets safety specifications and safety design principles.
  • To identify safety risks and ensure the residual risks are tolerable.
  • To produce accurate cost estimates, cost efficient and workable functional designs in a frequently changing environment.
  • To continuously assess the impact of new technology, tools and standards, and improve best practices.
  • To provide innovative ideas for new products and enhancements.
  • To ensure that system safety design meets the customer requirements and applicable safety standards.
  • To carry out specific duties as required, commensurate with LR and Job Family, as defined in CHORUS Roles as Project Safety Manager and Work Package Manager. 

Key Requirements

  • Primary Education background and experience: 
  • B.Sc. Electronics or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
  • 10+ years experience in a related engineering field, and at least 5 years managerial experience
  • Detailed knowledge of system lifecycle, safety design principles and risk analysis.
  • 5+ years in a Safety Engineering role in train control, or other industry, such as aircraft, automotive or nuclear industry.
  • Knowledge of Safety Engineering in real time and complex systems, including system architecture, hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of railway signaling principles and system operation, familiar with Thales products.
  • Extensive experience with safety standards (MIL, CENELEC, IEC, IEEE), best practices, safety methods and techniques (PHA, SHA, OSHA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, HAZOP, HZL). Working knowledge of relevant clauses of EN 50126/28/29 standards.
  • Capable to manage multiple tasks, and to handle frequent emergencies and/or sudden work re-planning during the project planning and/or execution stage.

Decision Making

  • Approve all safety activities and safety documents.
  • Approve safety estimates.
  • Set priorities and delegate work to team/project leaders.
  • Evaluate performance of technical staff.
  • Manage staff competencies and training.
